Indianapolis,Ind.AbillintroducedtotheRepublicandominatedIndianaStateSenateon
ThursdaybyStateSenatorKarenTallian(DPortage),wouldallowthosewithcertainmedical
conditionstousemarijuanaasaformoftreatment,ifrecommendedbytheirphysicians.
SB284wouldalsocreatetheDepartmentofMarijuanaEnforcement(D.O.M.E.)tooversee
themedicalmarijuanaprogram,includingtheestablishmentofanadvisorycommitteeto
evaluatethesuccessfulnessoftheprogram.Sen.Talliannotedthepositiveeffectscannabis
isknownforcreatinginpatientssufferingfromepilepsy,cancer,multiplesclerosis,glaucoma,
andotherdebilitatingillnesses.
Thosewhoareopposedtothelegalizationofmedicalmarijuanaoftenarguethatthe
uncertaintyofthesideeffectscreateahugeproblemhowever,Sen.Talliannotedthe
proposalwouldallowforresearchinstitutionsthroughoutthestatetoconductindepth
researchontheeffectivenessofcannabis,asanexampleoftertiaryprevention.
Inorderforthisproposaltomoveforward,wemustfirstobtainacommitteehearing,said
Sen.Tallian.Manypeoplehavecontactedmeonthisissue,soitismyhopethecommittee
chairmanwillrecognizethepeoplessupportforcompassionateandcommonsense
marijuanareform.
TheIndianaGeneralAssemblyisinsessionuntilApril29ththisyear,sotheuphillbattle
concerningthelegalizationofmedicalmarijuanaisjustbeginning.
