South Africa emerged in 1994 from centuries of racially based extreme inequality and injustice. It is also a
country of great diversity -- geographical, historical, cultural, racial, ethnic and religious. This program will
examine South Africa's attempt to come to terms with inequality and diversity through the study of education
and schooling in its social context. This program, which travels to urban, suburban and rural areas in four of
South Africa's nine provinces, will explore the relationship between formal education and society in South Africa,
as well as in the larger context of the southern African region. We will focus on issues of human diversity (race,
ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, region, religion, special needs groups), inequality (based on these social
markers of identity), and social institutions (the role of the state and non-governmental agencies, civil society,
and the private sector in economic and social institutions, which include education).
Program activities will include:
Lectures and discussions provided by faculty members from several South African universities and civic
organizations
Observation and interaction in a wide variety of educational institutions; discussions with teachers,
administrators and students in each location
Visits to other rural and urban institutions
Travel to important historical, cultural and natural sites in South Africa
Organize service opportunities in rural and urban areas
