Abstract of the Proposal

Governance is strengthened among the poor and due to unity they are empowered to get their rights at
Panchayat level etc. Our project is to measure how far each family has been benefited by the financial
inclusion through SHG's (Self Help Groups) and how each member can be motivated to open SB
accounts and through that avail all government entitlements.
We are working with Dhan Foundation for the project of Financial Inclusion in the villages near the
township of Thanjavur.
Dhan Foundation is working under Self Help Groups concept in the villages by name
Thirumalaisamuthiram and Vallam Pudur. Totally with 400 families we are working in the villages
and the major livelihood of these families are Dairy and Agriculture. The major motive of these SHGs is
to help the poor women approach the formal lending sources like banks, to avoid the informal financial
services like money lenders who are exploiting the poor for their interest income. The poor members were

facilitated to do savings and based on their savings after 6 months of SHG formation they are sponsored
to bank for credit support. The savings of individual member ranges from 100-200 rupees aggregating to
Rs 10000 Rs20000/- per member. Maximum credit availed by the member at a time is Rs50000/-.
