Impact of media use on children and youth. (2003). Paediatrics & Child Health, 8(5),
301306.
The Canadian Pediatric Society wrote this article. The group is from Ottawa
Ontario in Canada. They have a website where they are dedicated to keeping children
safe. They have articles about babies, kids, and growing tips.
The media influence on children while their developing is drastic. Children are
exposed to media at such a young age. From the age of one, babies are sat in front of the
television. The exposure of media on children can either have good or bad effects.
Studies have shown that children who view violence, inappropriate and offensive
behavior can have negative effects. When kids watch violent things on television, there
is an increase in violent behavior by children. Also when children watch excessive
television, there is a chance of deterioration of the brain and a decrease in academic
performance.
Television can also have be a great asset to children. Toddlers watching Sesame
Street can learn great lessons. It teaches lessons about racial equality, kindness, and even
the alphabet. Children who are exposed to violence at a young age can increase

aggressive behavior. Children who come from minority groups, learning disabilities, or
abused children are more likely vulnerable to violence on television.
