Ghost Written Literacy Narrative: Kearstin Wainwright
Kearstin Wainwright is a junior from SHAPE, Belgium. She grew up with a father in the
army, so like many army families they traveled a lot. Her family settled in Belgium and this was
where her and her brothers received their education. When she first moved to Belgium, she dealt
with obstacles in school in the beginning, because the schools in Belgium were more advanced
than the schools in the United States. Although, she did have teachers that helped her overcome
and catch her up with her peers. A lot of her teachers made education fun, so she really enjoyed
learning. Though, like many, she did have some who she couldn't connect with.
In middle school Kearstin joined an organization called FBLA (Future Business Leaders
of America). In this organization she learned the ins and outs of the business world including:
finance, marketing and much more. Going into high school she made the decision to no longer be
a part of the organization. When applying for colleges there is a section that tells you to put down
what major you intend on studying. So, when she began to start the college application process
she thought about the time she spent being part of the FBLA organization and her military
background and what she wanted her career to be. She decided that she wanted to be a finance
officer in the military, so her major was going to be finance and she was going to partake in the
ROTC program. Kearstin applied to colleges like Hampton and Howard plus more.
She came to Hampton in the fall of 2012 as a finance major and ROTC minor. She did
well for her first semester. During her second semester in spring 2013 she did well except,

however, she did struggle with calculus, she ending up failing. Failing calculus had her thinking
that finance might not have been the right major for her seeing as those it was math based. She
decided to change her major. She changed her major to elementary education. She thought about
her teachers who made education fun for her and her babysitting experiences back home. They
both contributed to her decision in elementary education. Although she changed her major, her
minor was kept the same. Her experiences now as an education major are still stressful, between
classes and test, she enjoys it and doesn't regret her decision.
After she graduates she has a number of plans. She wants to move to either Texas or
California. She would like to join the army reserves and teach, or do Teach for America.
