1. Where in the Russian Federation would you find Chechnya?


They are found in the north Caucasus region.

How are the Chechens different from the Russians?

The Chechens are different than the Russians because they are a minority. Their
religion is Muslim.
3. Did the Chechens gain independence from tsarist Russia after the
1917 Russian Revolution? Explain.
They did in 1921 however it was only for one year because the Soviets took back
over Chechnya and made it a providence.

What did Stalin do to the Chechens during WWII? Why did he do this?

He accused them Chechens of collaborating with the Nazi invaders. He deported


everyone in this area because he didnt like what they were doing.

Who changed their fate, and how was their fate changed?

Nikita Khrushchev was responsible for changing their fate because he allowed them
to enter their homeland again.
6. What was the first Chechen War? [Who started it? When? Why?
Results?]
The war was started by Boris Yeltsin in 1994. The reason for the war is because
Yeltsin opposed the thought of Chechens of being independent. The result was that
Russia failed to win control of Chechnyas mountain range.
7. When was the second Chechen War? [Who started it? When? Why?
Results?]
It was started by Russia because the Chechnyas performed a terrorist attack on
Dagestan which killed a lot of people. The wart happened in 2000. Russia
recaptured the Chechen capital.
8. Prior to his death in 2006, the separatist Basayev was deemed to be
responsible for the most notorious event to that point in time. Identify
this event. How many deceased militants in this event were NOT
Chechen? Why might this be a significant change in the Chechen Wars?
He led many protest against many Russian forces and tried to get Chechens out of
the Russian Revolution. This event was the an attack on a school in Benslan. 28
out of 32 were not Chechen.
9. According to the American ambassador to Russia, what terrorist group
is assisting the Chechen rebels? How/why might Americans who were
once sympathetic to the Chechen cause for independence from the
Russian Federation have changed?

Al- Qaeda is assisting with the Chechens rebels. Since Al-Qaeda has performed
terrorsit attacks on the US we dont want to help them out as much.

10. Do you believe the Russians should grant Chechnya their


independence? Why or why not? [Answer this question in paragraph
format (minimum of six sentences).]
I dont believe that Russia should grant Chechnya their independence. One reason I
think this is because of all the things they have done to the US. They performed the
Boston bombing. Also, they started wars with Russia that did not need to been
fought. This resulted in a lot of deaths. Even though they were fighting for their
independence the violent acts did not need to be committed. That is why I do not
think they deserve their independence.
