What is It

Liberalism

 is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed and equality before
the law.
 aims to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. They can further be divided based
on their adherence to social liberalism or classical liberalism, although all liberal parties and
individuals share basic similarities, including the support for civil rights and democratic institutions.
 sought to replace the norms of hereditary privilege, state religion, absolute monarchy, the divine right
of kings and traditional conservatism with representative democracy and the rule of law.
 the belief in freedom, equality, democracy and human rights, is historically associated with thinkers
such as John Locke and Montesquieu.
 Liberalism – “liber”, means free. It is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the
governed, and equality before the law. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their

understanding of these principles, but they generally support limited government, individual rights
(including civil rights and human rights), capitalism (free markets), democracy, secularism, gender

equality, racial equality, internationalism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of
religion. Yellow is the political color most commonly associated with liberalism.
Generally, liberals were more likely to be secular, single and in possession of a college degree while less
likely to own a gun. Conservatives, most of whom adhere to social as well as fiscal conservatism, tended to
be more religious and more likely to be married, employed and own firearms.
A core argument of liberalism is that concentrations of unaccountable violent power are the
fundamental threat to individual liberty and must be restrained. The primary means of restraining power are
institutions and norms at both domestic and international level
Conservatism

 is a political and social philosophy promoting traditional social institutions in the context of culture and
civilization.
 is opposition to rapid changes, and supports keeping traditions in society. Gradualism is one form. The
first known use of the term in a political context was by François-René de Chateaubriand in 1818. ...
The term is associated with right-wing politics. It has been used to describe a wide range of views
 Conservatives seek to preserve a range of institutions such as religion, parliamentary government,
and property rights, with the aim of emphasizing social stability and continuity. The more traditional
elements—reactionaries—oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were".
 is opposition to rapid changes, and supports keeping traditions in society. Gradualism is one form. The
first known use of the term in a political context was by François-René de Chateaubriand in 1818.
 The central tenets of conservatism include tradition, organic society, hierarchy, authority, and property
rights.

What’s More

The picture shows an illustration of two people that looks to be in two different races. It could be an
illustration about diversity and could be a symbol of civil rights towards everyone.

2. Conservatism

It is an illustration of the statue of liberty in angle as if it’s falling while there are people around it. I think this
symbolizes how conservatives opposes to liberalism.

What I Have Learned

What I Can Do

DIRECTIONS: Compare Liberalism and conservatism in the present Philippine political system of
governance. Write your insights on the box.

For different people , places and periods of time, Liberalism and Conservatism mean different things.
Liberalism occurs in the Philippines in the form of liberal democracy, which is our form of government,
Republican democracy, the fact of multiparty pluralism, and not only because of liberal parties.
Conservatism, on the other hand, also exists in the Philippines because there is traditionally a Christian
nation in our state.
