The place I chose to profile was the Art Gallery in the Student Union. For my first visit, I
looked at the atmosphere, the layout, and the features of the gallery. The Art Gallery is a small
nonrectangular room with blocked corners which look like inverse corners. The room itself is
odd shaped which makes it appear to be a design flaw but the weird shape works well with the
artwork and allows the art to flow with each other. One wall is placed further back than the rest
of the room which adds more space to that side of the room but also makes the other side look
small in comparison. The walls of the Art Gallery are white but the floors are light brown
hardwood that reminds me of the color of bamboo. The atmosphere in the gallery is calming
because there isnt much noise and when the piano is being played is it extremely peaceful.
Outside the Art Gallery is an area with a piano and a large painted piece of artwork. The light in
the Art Gallery is not naturally bright because at the moment they have a piece of artwork that is
being lit up and the shade to the window is down, which is blocking some of the natural light.
There are track lights on the ceiling but are not turned on since it is bright enough. The
temperature of the room is not warm enough to take my jacket off but it is at a temperature that
allows you to not feel suffocated in the jacket. It may be chilly because there are many windows
and they may not keep the warmth in or the cold out. On the way to the art gallery I noticed that
the student union was warm but it got colder as I came to the gallery, so maybe the heat doesnt
work as well in this part of the student union. There are no places to sit inside the gallery except

for a desk the worker sits at, but there are about twelve seats in the area where the piano is that
you can sit in and look through the glass paneled wall to look at the artwork. There are seats
closer to the glass wall to get a closer view and there are chairs spread out around the piano to
listen to the music and to look at the art from a different viewpoint. There are also tables between
each seat to put stuff on or to do work. The seats have a floral pattern on them and are
comfortable; they do not have wooden armrests which makes them easier to relax in since they
are padded. There are also plants in the piano area which gives it a home-like feeling. Most
people will probably gather around the piano when people play and when people look at the
artwork they probably wont gather but sporadically walk through and look at the artwork. The
artwork is easily accessible because you can see parts of the work down the hallway and of the
student union and it is also accessible through two sets of doors in the wall that connects the
gallery and the piano area. Anybody can come and look at the artwork. The white walls of the
gallery bring attention to the artwork and the light hardwood floors gives it a calming
atmosphere. Feel like the coloring works in a way but a part of me thinks the white walls are
bland but it might look different with the window shades open. The ceiling of the gallery looks
like a half circle while the other part of the ceiling is elevated higher. Inside the gallery there is
also a raised platform that has items that look like rocks but they are crystal clear with dark areas
inside them. They have lights centered on this platform to bring attention to it. There are outlets
throughout the wall to plug in artworks that light up, like the one that is currently on display.
There is also a podium at the doorway of the Art Gallery for people to sign in when they enter.
On the podium there are also business cards for the people that overlook the gallery. The Art
Gallery is open from 10 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday and open from 10 am to 6 pm on
Sundays.
