“Embrace the Signs of Change”

The Philippine Art Awards had been the prominent regional and national visual arts

competition for almost 20 years. Signs of Change is an annual event that is looked forward by Filipino

artists every year. Finalists came from all over the archipelago in Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and

Mindanao. Every year, the PAA feature the works of the winners. Only a total of 20 winners are featured

this year. “Paradise Lost” by Dexter Sy won the grand prize this year. His work says that “innumerable

layers of thoughts and ideas accumulate in the human psyche until they

almost seem random, unrelated, and not cohesive.” Personally, I had my

top four picks. “Through Troubled Water, for High Times and Love” by

Abigail Dionisio; “Convergence Recovery” by Jose Cinco, “Welcome to the

Jungle” by Neil Russell Balajadia; and “Momentary” by Marc Aran Reyes.

“Through Troubled Water, for High Times and Love” is my favorite. It

features a different idea, oil and embroidery on canvass. The art is very pleasing and fresh to the eye

indeed. “Convergence Recovery” used mixed media and was done on wood, another appealing form of

art. The next one, “Welcome to the Jungle” is very innovative and mostly used recycled found objects

such as wire, wood, and resin. Lastly, “Momentary” shows the concept of dreaming and suddenly

waking up from a fall. Simplicity is what drew me to this art.

The works of the winners are featured in an exhibit in Yuchengco Museum, RCBC Plaza,

Makati City. The museum itself is a work of art. It houses four floors, each floor featuring a different

theme. The exhibits of PAA Signs of Change competition is located at the third floor. The exhibits were

divided into two venues. Both of which differs in its theme. The first one features a dramatic ambiance.

With all the proper elements for the venue combined, the exhibit attracts audience. The first venue

incorporates into its design a suspended garden resembling a Japanese Zen garden as its centerpiece,

on the ceiling. Both the ceiling

and the floor are finished in white. Even the style of the seats is

chosen according to the theme, rattan designer stools. The area

bridging the first and second venue shows

the technique of wall washing since the walls

are plain white. Warm Recessed and track

lighting are also the main lighting types for

this area. The second venue is more Third Floor Yuchengco Museum,

appealing. It features a cleaner look. The

elements are symmetrically arranged,

symmetrical is always pleasing to the eye. The colors applied also gives

a factor in the cleaner look. Beige, white, and brown compliments each

other. The glossy tiled floor finish, white ceiling panel, beige walls,

white podium, dark brown rattan stool chairs, bright white track lights

balances each element.

All in all, the design of the third floor of the museum is Third Floor, Yuchengco Museum,

appropriate for the exhibit. It creates the proper ambiance which

attracts the attention of the audience. With the colors applied, lighting, and the proper elements
combined, divergence of attention is minimal. The visitors can focus on the artwork without being

bored. Adding up the Samsung technology, modernity is also established in the environment of the

museum. Therefore, the design of the museum is efficient in making sure the visitors don’t stray their

attention elsewhere.
