This, of course, is in light of your decision to leak confidential information regarding one of our clients who filed a claim about a pet store clerk who was traumatized after assisting the euthanization of 13 young and healthy dogs. Naturally, this has caused public outroar about the dog killing. Unfortunately, you violated a very important policy and principle that is a staple to this company’s ethical policy; you broke the client’s right to privacy and exposed the client. We are morally obligated to report incidences such as this but you approached the situation in a poor manner; one that does not reflect on the company’s internal policies. You have always been scrupulous about keeping claims confidential and I am disappointed in how you handled this one situation where action was appropriate. I’m disappointed that you went directly the media instead of discussing with me first to find a solution; communication is key and there are many different ways to handle a difficult situation such as this. When you leaked information to the media, you undercut the legal system and exposed the client when they have not yet been legally convicted of doing any wrong-doing. A more neutral solution could have een used. You need to discuss matters like these with your superiors before taking any action. Additionally, this is a matter where the police should have been involved before the media. The company could have presented the information to the police, anonymously, in order to see if the client had broken any laws and the police could have taken the appropriate and necessary action. Even more importantly, the company could have approached the client first to discuss the situation before even going to the police. Now we are faced with a situation where the public is outraged at one of our clients before the full and true story was revealed. Consequently, I am unpleased to inform you that you will be terminated from the company immediately. Please pack and remove all of your belonging off company property by Monday morning.
