Pericles was born in one of Athens leading
families of the time His father,
Xanthippus, was a hero of the Persian War
and his mother belonged to the powerful
Alcmaeonidae family. He grew up along
with artists and philosophers.
His first act ever recorded was a financial
sponsorship of a play by Aeschylus; this
act foreshadowed the future leaders
wealth artistic taste and political savvy.
Pericles was the most prominent and
influential Greek statesman. He was also
known to be an orator and a general
during the Golden Age, specially the time
of the Peloponnesian wars.

Peloponnesian Wars.
He was a skillful politician, an inspiring
speaker, and a respected general. He so
dominated the life of Athens from 461 to
429 B.C. that this period often is called
the Age of Pericles. He had three goals: (1)
to strengthen Athenian democracy, (2) to
hold and strengthen the empire, and (3) to
glorify Athens.
WHY was he /she so influential in Greek
society?
He was the responsible of the full
development the Athenian democracy and
the Athenian empire. He made Athens be
the political and cultural focus of Greece.
