DIABETES AND FOOT SPAS

In the instructions of a Foot Spa, it usually states not suitable for Diabetics.
This causes concern so below is a brief explanation of this.
There are 3 main reasons for this warning:
1.

Poor circulation
If circulation is poor the skin may be thin and fragile, thus prolonged
soaking may damage the skin further.

2.

Reduced sensation due to Nerve Damage

If there is a reduction in normal sensation, the user may not be able
to detect if the water is too hot, or whether they are generally feeling
uncomfortable.

3.

Dry Skin
Diabetes often causes dry skin, prolonged soaking of the feet
complicates this by taking the natural moisture of the skin leaving it
very dry. Thus, if your skin is already dry using a Spa will worsen
this.

Suitability for Foot Spa use needs confirming by a Registered Chiropodist with
the Health Professions Council. Please ask the chiropodist at your Diabetic
Annual Review if you are concerned about this.
Please remember, if you are suitable to use a Foot Spa, always moisturise your
feet thoroughly afterwards with a moisturising cream such as E45 or Aqueous
Cream.
