Fourth Grade Vocal Skills Lesson Plan
Overview:
1. Power point presentation/demonstration of vocal skills (8 minutes)
2. Practicing correct/incorrect vocal skills (4 minutes)
3. Identification/analysis of correct/incorrect vocal skills (8 minutes)
4. Learn Walk In Jerusalem (10 minutes)
5. Singing game (10 minutes)
Vocal Skills Content
1. Posture: feet flat on the floor and shoulder width a part; sternum slightly raised; shoulders relaxed
2. Breathing: deep, belly breath; little motion in upper body
3. Resonance: clear, non-nasal; focused, non-breathy sound
Activity Sequence: Identification/analysis of correct/incorrect vocal skills
1. One teacher will demonstrate a vocal skill and the other teacher will sing incorrectly, both singing the same
line from Walk in Jerusalem.
2. Students will identify which teacher is exhibiting the vocal skill and which teacher is not exhibiting the
skill.
3. Skills to address:
a. Proper vs improper posture
b. Deep vs shallow breathing
c. Open vs nasal sound
d. Focused vs breathy sound
Activity Sequence: Singing game
1. After Walk in Jerusalem is learned, tell class to sing the song while walking around the room.
2. All students must stop walking when the teacher stops playing the accompaniment (every few measures).
Whichever student is standing in a pre-designated area will sing the following line of the song, individually,
a cappella.
3. The teacher will continue playing the song where the student left off, and the class will continue to
sing/walk together until the teacher decides to stop again.
Learner Objectives
1. Understand correct posture and breathing while singing. Understand how to sing with a clear, focused
sound.
2. Identify correct/incorrect technique in the context of a song.
3. Demonstrate correct vocal skills while singing Walk in Jerusalem.
Teacher Objectives
1. Clearly explain and demonstrate correct vocal skill.
2. Encourage students in their analysis of correct/incorrect vocal skills.
3. Assess students for their demonstration of vocal skill in the singing game.
