Assignment #1: Virtual Faith
I have sought to show how GenX culture is not a theological wasteland but instead
is theologically compelling. Indeed, it is so compelling that this pop culture has
implications for ministering to the generation. (Beaudoin 175)
Beaudoins purpose: Beaudoin instructs the reader that though culture is becoming
less intertwined with formal religion, it does not necessarily invalidate experiences.
Cultural experiences through music and other forms of entertainment serve as a
different type of stimulation, where the listener does not have to decipher as much
while feeling more of an emotional effect; in other words, culture has become a
subtle form of religion. Beaudoin also expands on four main points: suspicion on
part of religious institutions, the nature of ones experiences, religious suffering, and
ambiguous faith. The author makes interesting commentary in regards to
Madonnas music video Like a Prayer, which features Saint Martin, a black saint
that represents interracial justice. Beaudoin also depicts Xer suffering in goth
culture, with all black clothing and a self-drawn image of suffering.
How does pop culture serve as a medium for religion to be communicated? (i.e.
Like a Prayer - Madonna, Gregorian chant Bergeron article)
Beaudoin cites the increased rate of divorce in the transition from the Boomers to
the GenXers. What can be attributed to this decrease in the ability to commit in the
Xer generation? (cultural maturation, ability to question beliefs arises, murders of
childhood heroes)
