Clarification on Right-Hand Rule

Your fingers (excluding the thumb) will curl
along the direction of the smaller angle.

Example
A small 50-g block slides down a frictionless
surface through height h = 20 cm and then sticks
to a uniform rod of mass 100 g and length 40
cm. The rod pivots about point O through angle
before momentarily stopping. Find .

Example
Shown is a top view of a thin uniform rod of length
0.600 m and mass M rotating horizontally at 80.0
rad/s counterclockwise about an axis through its
center. A particle of mass M/3.00 and travelling
horizontally at speed 40.0 m/s hits the rod and
sticks to it. The particles path is perpendicular to
the rod at the instant of the hit, at a distance d from
the rods center. At what value of d are the rod and
particle stationary after the hit?

Example
Refer to the conical pendulum figure. Show that
the magnitude of the angular momentum of
the bob about the center of the circle (the
path that the bob traces) is given by

Example
A meter stick will balance on your finger if you
support it at its center of gravitythe
midpoint. The two halves have equal weights.
A broom will also balance on your finger if you
support it at its center of gravity. Suppose you
cut the broom into two parts through the
center of gravity and weighed each part on a
scale. Would their weights be equal?

Example
Tightrope walkers along high wires carry a heavy
horizontal bar. You would think that this extra
weight makes each step harder to achieve
than with a lighter bar. Why is this done?

Example
What happens to a discman when turned on in
outer space?

Example
You have a spool of thread, already partially
unwound as shown. You pull (slowly) on the
thread. Does the spool go right or left?

Winding and Unwinding of the Spool

Problem
A body of radius R and mass m is rolling
without slipping with speed v on a horizontal
surface. It then rolls up a hill to a maximum
height

Is the body a solid sphere, hollow sphere, solid

cylinder or hollow cylinder? Support your
answer by solving the moment of inertia
about the axis of rotation.
