Ms. Jennifer Madsen

College of New Caledonia
3330 2nd Avenue
Prince George, BC V2N 1P8
Dear Ms. Madsen
The following is an overview of the responsibilities required of the mayor, city councilors, and school
trustees, as researched by me. The information has been gathered from the official sites and other
available sources.
Findings and Analyses
In order to be eligible to qualify for running for the mayoral seat a candidate must be a Canadian citizen,
18 years of age or older before the election day, a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months and
not fall under any of the disqualification criteria as outlined in the Local Government Act. The major of
Prince George will have several roles, first of which is as the head and chief executive officer of the
municipality. The mayor is responsible for all of the following: provide leadership on the council, relay
information to the council, preside over the council meetings, give direction to municipal officers for the
implementation of programs and policies, consider the opinions of the council, and follow the policies
and procedures as outlined in Chapter 26 of the Community Charter.
Similar to the mayor, all councilors must be citizens of Canada, 18 years of age or more, residents of BC
for in excess of 6 months, and not disqualified for any reasons according to the Local Government Act.
All councilors are tasked with considering the well-being and interests of their community. Councillors
need to contribute to the creation, implementation, and evaluation of the municipal programs and
policies. Councilors are to attend and participate in council meetings, as well as any other committee
meetings that they are appointed to by the mayor. The councilors are assigned duties and expected to
fulfill them to the best of their abilities.
School Trustees are subject to the same candidate requirements as both mayor and councilors. School
Trustees are expected to listen to their communities, helping to build and maintain a healthy school
system. Trustees are meant to support local priorities, values, and expectations of the community that
they represent. The trustees are to guide the work of the school district in setting plans, yearly budgets,

and policies. School Trustees make up part of the local school board that report to community members
on how students are progressing.
Summary
In conclusion the mayor, councilors, and school trustees must all meet the qualifications outlined
previously before being able to be sworn in to office. Once in the office all members of the local
government are focused on helping and protecting the people in their municipality.
Sincerely

Mikayla Kostiuk
