My Skill Development Chart

These are skills that I find important for a career in the

science field. Ive ranked each of these skills from one
through five. A rating of five indicates mastery while a
rating of one indicates a need for improvement. I will be
updating my progress in each skill throughout my years
here!

Ive updated my progress by the end of the Spring Semester into the Fall 2015
Semester Column. I ranked myself a 4 in Mathematical skills, a 3 in Communication,
a 3 in Patience and Persistence, a 4 in Cautiousness, a 3 in Critical Thinking, and a 3
in Technological Skills. Although I understand the concepts in Calculus 5B better
than I did in Calculus 5A, I still havent mastered the subject enough to be confident
about my answers when I do homework or take exams. There is always a doubt
when I solve my problems. I gave myself a 3 in Communication because I see an
improvement in my approach when it comes to socializing and public speaking, but
it still makes me nervous. I used to be more passive about speaking, but now I dont
feel as discouraged to stand in front of a crowd. I believe my improvements came
from the many times that I had to communicate, such as when I interact with
patients and hospital staff, when I give my little sister advice, when I talk to the
club members, or when I plan events with the board. I am no longer able to carry
out my day without proper communication. The older I get, the more I embrace it. I
gave myself a 3 in Patience and Persistence, which is lower than I started with
because I notice my temper is shorter this semester. I believe it is because my
courses are more stressful this semester, so I feel rushed to get my work done.
Because of working at a face pace regularly, I am less patient. However, my
persistence has stayed the same. I gave myself a 4 in Cautiousness because I feel
more coordinated and integrated as a person. Ive had a lot of practice this
semester. I didnt improve much on critical thinking so I gave myself a 3 again.
Critical Thinking is involved in most of my Chemistry work, but it always takes me a
long period of time to think of explanations. I still need work on this skill especially if
I want to do research in the future. Ive improved on Technological skills this
semester because I use it more. I worked on three website assignments this
semester, created 2 surveys for my club, and learned how to use Excel in Chemistry
class.

For Spring of 2015, I gave myself a 4 in mathematical skills because Ive studied up
to calculus, but still stumble from time to time, specifically in calculus. I love
algebra, geometry, and statistics and find myself proficient in all those math levels.
I gave myself a 2 on communication skills because I tend to take longer to gather up
my thoughts, causing me to stutter or express myself awkwardly. I gave myself a 4
on patience and persistence because I have a pretty calm personality and Im
stubborn to accomplish a task correctly. I gave myself a 3 on cautiousness because I
am quite clumsy and forgetful, and will have to work on that all my life. I gave
myself a 3 on critical thinking because I need to work on considering different
approaches towards solving one problem. I gave myself a 2 on technological skills
because I just use technology for basic tasks, and I dont take advantage of the
advanced functions.
