Project Title: - Heat Transfer Enhancement In Natural Convection Sinks By Pin Fin Elements.

Abstract:Extended surfaces (fins) are frequently used in heat exchanging devices for the purpose of
increasing heat transfer between a primary surface and the surrounding surface. Finned surfaces
are most commonly used as heat sinks in various industrial applications such as power
electronics, telecommunications etc. A pin fin is a cylinder or other shaped element attached
perpendicular to a wall with the transfer fluid passing over the element. Perforation of the fins
increases the local heat transfer rates around the perforations due to formation of jet-like flows.
The heat transfer enhancement is also achieved by minimizing increase in pressure drop for the
rise of heat transfer coefficient.
The study aims to review the popular pin fin heat sink models developed over the time for
natural convection heat sinks and make an effort to consolidate the findings for easy future
reference. The various factors affecting the heat transfer by natural convection will be studied
and the effect of pin fins on them will be presented. The study will be complimentary to the
authors project which deals with pin fin elements. The objective is to establish a fundamental
basis for further research and development within the field of perforated pin fins.
