UNIT 5.1.

NAVIGATION ACTIVITY
Right or wrong?
1. By heading is meant: the angle between the fore and aft line and the
course line. Heading constantly changes due to sea and wind influences and
steering errors
2. By course is meant: the direction in with the vessel is steered.
3. The track consists of one or a number of course lines along which the
navigator has proceeded: WRONG intends to proceed.
4. A great circle course will form equal angles with the meridians
5. A rhumb line (loxodrome) will result in the shortest connection between
two places on the earth
6. Composite sailing combines the advantages of the great circle and the
rhumb line: it will offer the shortest route, while the vessel can keep
constant true directions
7. Due to influences of wind and current destination can only be reached
after alterations of course8. By course over ground is understood the course that the ship will follow if
allowances are made for the effects caused by wind and sea.
9. By course made good is understood the course that the ship will follow if
influences by wind and sea are not taken into consideration
10. When sailing along the coast, compass bearings of conspicuous objects
are taken at regular intervals11. A conspicuous object is an object on land or at sea that is mentioned
and described in the pilot book.12. Cross bearings form an angle between 2 bearing lines that have been
taken of two conspicuous objtects13. If possible, three checklines are taken of a third conspic14. A cocked hat is a triangle formed by three conspicuous objects15. When there is only one conspicuous object, a position fix is made by
taking two bearings of the same conspic at the same moment
16. By dead reckoning is meant finding ones position by taking into
consideration course, last known position and speed.17. With astronomical navigation observations are taken of the sun, the
moon or the stars with the aid of a sextant
