CHAPTER 6: NETWORKING

1. Define the term computer network.

A computer network is a group of computer systems and other computing hardware devices
that are linked together through communication channels to facilitate communication and
resource-sharing among a wide range of users. Networks are commonly categorized based
on their characteristics. A network can be a LAN or a WAN

2. Give four examples of resources that can be shared using a network.

Hardware resources: internet connection, expensive devices such as laser printers
Software resources: Data and application software.

3. Name three advantages and three disadvantages of using networks.

a. Advantages:
Sharing resources: such as internet connection, expensive devices such as laser
printers and shares data and application software.

Storage: users can save copies of their files on the main network servers
where there is usually only one database to backup.
Communication: Network users can communicate with each other using email and chatting software.
b. Disadvantages:
Users may waste time sending e-mail messages that are not related to work
Users may have to wait for printed output because only one or two printers
are available for all users
If a virus infects one computer, it is likely to spread across the network.
4. What does LAN stand for?
Local Area Network
5. What is a LAN? Give one example of where a LAN is used.
A computer network that covers a relatively small area. A LAN is usually in the
same building or in the same site. A LAN can also be a wireless network that makes
use of radio waves to connect the users
Example: connects the computer hardware in a localized area such as an office or
home
6. What does WAN stand for?
Wide Area Network
