14. What is a bridge?

A bridge is a network device that is used to connect two LAN segments. Each LAN is
connected to the bridge through a port. A bridge is usually placed between two separate
groups of computers that talk with each other, but not that much with the computers in the
other group. The bridge maintains a table with the MAC addresses for each device

15. How does a bridge identify computers on the network?

The bridge maintains a table with the MAC addresses for each device. Computers
are identified on the network by the NIC MAC address, which in turn, identifies the
communicating parties.
16. What is a router?
A device that connects at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs, and learns
the locations of the devices in these networks. The router has a routing table that stores the
IP addresses of all the networks connected to it.

17. Devices on the Internet have an address known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address.
18. What is a gateway?
A network device used to connect a LAN to a WAN (often the internet). In other words, its
a device that connects two networks with different transmission protocols. It provides a
connection, monitors the usage of the connection and ensures that the data passed from one
network to the other is appropriate.

19. What does the word MODEM stand for?

MODEM is short for Modulator Demodulator.

20. What is the function of a modem?

It is a device that connects a computer to a communication link. It changes analog signals to
digital signals when it receives data and changes digital signals to analog signals when it sends
data. A modem may be internal or external.
It allows a digital system to use an analogue phone network.

21. What does the phrase network topology mean?

Logical topologies. The shape of the cabling layout used to link devices is called the
physical topology of the network. This refers to the layout of cabling, the locations of
nodes, and the interconnections between the nodes and the cabling.
