WHAT IS PROTEIN?

Actual- an organic compound made of amino

acids joined by peptide bonds; primary
building block of organisms.
Our words- A type of compound of amino
acids joined by bonds that give you energy.

HOW IS PROTEIN FORMED?

Proteins start out as DNA. They are formed

from amino acids. Peptides are a substance
in between amino acids and protein.
Protein starts as a chain of amino acids. Then
it joins together to make a structure with
different types of bonds.

EXPERIMENT

What?- We plan to show how protein breaks

apart and re-bond to form something new
and different.

MATERIALS

A Stove
A pot with lid
Cold Water
1 egg
Tongs
Salt

STEPS

1. Turn your stove on medium heat, put the egg(s)

in the pot, fill your pot with cold water about an
inch over the egg(s) and add a pinch of salt.
2. Put the pan on the stove with a lid and wait for
the water to boil. Once it starts boiling, turn off
the stove but keep the pot on the warm burner.
3. Leave the eggs in the hot water for 10-15
minutes, then take the pot off the stove and drain
the water.
4. Then run cold water on them. After that
remove the shells as soon as possible.

RESULT

When you boil an egg, the protein first

denatures (which means the bonds break).
Then when the egg is fully boiled, new bonds
form together to make a hard egg.
