Research Question
In the world of IT (Information Technology), members of this Discourse Community
(DC) must have an awareness of the language and methodology utilized in the tech community
in order to stay on top of an ever-changing field. The purpose of my research paper is to answer
questions such as: What specific traits make successful people stand out more in this field?
My research will revolve around the assumption that in order to be successful, one must abide to
three qualities. First, the field of IT requires persistency when following the latest news and
trends as technology quickly becomes obsolete. Second, it is important to attain an expansive
knowledge of various languages to be fully prepared for any situation. Lastly, communication
and empathy is essential when dealing with others, a task that is particularly challenging when
interacting with those outside of the DC.
Body Paragraphs
I will lead into the body paragraphs by discussing how the tech world functions as a DC
and the various lexis, genres, and values that are related. The articles that we have read in class
will be especially helpful in this definition. Then I will restate the three main points that I have
included above and back up my points with any research I come across. I will include my
personal background which includes my own experiences in the community.

Plan for Research
I have already initiated my research by scheduling two interviews for people that are
members of this DC. I may want to revise my research question once more, but once I am
comfortable to continue I will proceed by researching sources in the library and through online
articles. I will make notes of my findings to further outline my paper, then I will be prepared to
create the first draft. Once this draft is completed, I will take it to the Writing Center to get some
feedback. After a few revisions, I may be ready for the final draft as well as the works cited
page.
