seewhatittrulyis.Theycangothroughalotjusttogetcloserorremaindistantthrough
years.Theholocaustcampstorefamiliesapartandsometimesmadethemstrongerin
someways.Arelationshipthatgrowsstrongisinabookcall

andhisfatherareataconcentrationcampandtheirrelationshipchangesbecausehis
fatherisemotionlesstoEliebeforethecamp.Thecampchangeshisdadbecauseof
theeventsthatoccurtothem.ThebondthatEliehadwithhisfatherwastheonly
reasonwhytheylivedthroughthehorriblecampstayanditmeantalottohimandto
thebook.

TherelationshipbetweenElieandhisFatherbeforethecampwasntthatgood

therewasbarelyanyemotionorconnectionbetweenthemuntiltheyreachthecamp.
WhentheyreachthecamphisfatherstartstocryMyfatherwascrying.Itwasthe
firsttimeIsawhimcry.Ineverthoughtitpossible(pg19).Thisshowsthathisfather
wasntverysentimentaltohisownchildren,andnevertriedtogetclosetohisfamily
beforethecamp.HisfatherwasntthatclosetohimorhisfamilyMyfatherwasa
culturedman,ratherunsentimental.Herarelydisplayedhisfeelings,notevenwithinhis

family.(pg4).Thisshowsthathisfatherwasnotclosetohimorhisfamilybeforethe
holocaustconcentrationcamps.

Hisfatherchangesbythethingsthatoccurtohiminthecampandaffectshis

attitudeandwordstoElie.WhentheywereattheconcentrationcamphiselliesaysI
glancedoveratmyfather.Howchangedhelooked!(pg37).Theauthorshowsthathe
startedtoseethechangeofhisfatherbecausetheyhavearrivedatAuschwitz,Work
orthecrematorium(pg39)andhisfatherrealizesthattheymightdie.Hisfathergets
beatenandEliehasntseenitbeforeorknowshowtoreactuntilMyfathermusthave
guessedmythoughts,becausehewhisperedinmyear:Itdoesn'thurt(pg39).This
showsthathisfatherchangesthewayhethinksandthisabouthissonElieasit
happensandhedidn'tdothatbeforethecamp.
TherelationshipwithhisfathermeantalottoEliebecausehisfatherwasthe
mainreasonwhyheenduredthecamptotheend.Andhavinghisfathertherewasa
likeahavingafamilymemberalivestillforhimtoloveandcareabout.Myson,they
arebeatingme!...onemorestabtotheheart,onemorereasontohate,onelessreason
tolive(pg109).Thisshowsthatashisfatherishurtinghefeelsthepainaswell
becausehesthereasonwhyhecontinues.Therelationshipwasstillaboutenduring
untiltheendforbothofthemuntilhisfatherdies.Sincemyfathersdeath,nothing
matteredtomeanymore(pg113).ThisshowsthatEliewasabletohandleeverything
untilhisfathersdeathandmadehimfeellifeless,thatwashismainreasontoliveand
nowitsgone.Ifhisfatherdiedinthebeginning,therewouldn'thavebeenabook

becausethatmeansEliewouldn'thavehadmotivationforhimtoliveandhewouldve
givenupanddied.

TherelationshipbetweenElieandhisfatherhasenduredalotthroughouttheir
timeattheconcentrationcampAuschwitz.Hisfatherisemotionlessbeforethecamp
untilthingsthathappenthatmakehimwanttochangethewayhethinksabouthisson
Elie.Thewaythathechangesarethethingsthatoccurtohimandwhatalsohelpshim
changeisthathissonwastherewhenthingsoccurredtohim.Eliesfathermeant
everythingtohimbecauseitwastheonlypersonthathehadthatwasfamilybutwhen
hepassedawayhewaslifeless.Ifhisfatherwasntthere,therewouldnthavebeenthe
bookNight.
