Instructions: Take a hand full ofdry soil. Addwateralittleatatimeuntilyoucanformitinto
a ball (not to wet!). Once you form your soil into a ball press it in betweenyourthumb and
fingers flattening it. Observehow the soil reacts. Using thedescriptionsbelowdeterminethe
textureofeachsoilsample.

Sandformsaweakribbon,lessthan1inchbeforebreaking,grittytexture.
Siltformsaribbon12inchesbeforebreaking,smoothflourytexture.
Clayformsa2inchorlargerribbon,smoothstickytexture.

Match
thesampletothecorrectsoiltextureafterperformingtheribbontest.

water.Shakethejaruntilallclumpsarebrokenup(thedishdetergenthelpswiththis).Then
setthejardownandallowthesoiltosettle.Thisparthasbeendoneforyoubecauseittakes
24hourstosettle,
dontpickupordisturb!
Measuretotalheightofthesoilthenmeasurethe
heightofeachsoillayer.Drawapictureofthesoilandlabelthetexturelayers,andcalculate
thepercentages.
