Bottle shaking Method

Place soil sample into the jar ¼ full, then


remove any visible organic debris. Break up any
hard lumps if necessary.

Add water but leave some airspace for mixing


and place lid on the jar.

Shake vigorously for 1 minute. Turn jar over and


ensure no soil has been left to stick to the bottom.
Leave jar in an upright position for one minute

Draw a line just above the first layer of sand. Then


leave jar in an upright position for one hour. Draw
a line above the second layer of soil. Then leave
the jar again but for at least twenty fours now.

Draw a line above the third layer. Then


empty the jar.

Take a ruler and measure distance in millimeters


between the marks. Record the thickness of each
soil layer.

Measure the total height of the soil examined.


Calculate the percentage of sand, silt, and clay.
Determine soil type using soil texture triangle.
