Tap the Source

Dear friends of Yoga
Yoga is one of the most important spiritual and healing traditions in the
world. It teaches regular and consistent practice of asanas, pranayama,
mantras, meditation, service, devotion and self-knowledge.
Yoga addresses principles of human behaviour and right lifestyle. These
include the right use of the senses, the emotions and the mind. Thus it is
relevant to everyone and to the deeper aspect of human culture.
Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda developed a practical teaching system to share this knowledge with all audiences and all
levels of society.
The crisis we have in civilisation today is not simply an ecological and
political crisis; it is a crisis of consciousness. Yoga can help to act with
compassion and awareness, to bring greater unity and harmony to ourselves and to humanity.

The Yoga Masters

Swami Sivananda

(1887 1963)
A great sage and yogi of modern India and the inspiration behind the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. Swami Sivananda served many
years as a physician before renouncing worldly life. He lived for more than
30 years as a renunciant in Rishikesh, located on the banks of the Ganges
in the foothills of the Himalayas. There he established the Divine Life Society
and trained an entire generation of recognised yoga masters. He wrote more
than 200 books and his teachings continue to inspire people around the
world.

Swami Vishnudevananda

(1927 1993)
A world-renowned authority on yoga. He was sent by his teacher Swami
Sivananda to the West, where he founded the international Sivananda Yoga
Vedanta Centres in 1957. He was an untiring activist for world peace, a
highly regarded master of Hatha and Raja Yoga, and author of the classic
textbooks The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and
Mantras.

Welcome to the
Yoga Retreat House
Swami Vishnudevananda
provided the impetus to
establish a spiritual oasis
in the Alps as early as the
1970s. The Sivananda Yoga
Vedanta Retreat House was
founded in 1998 in a wide
valley of the Kitzbhel
Mountains surrounded by
fresh air, pure water, green
meadows, the sound of cow
bells, quiet woods, medicinal
plants along scenic footpaths, sparkling brooks and
pristine lakes.

THE UNIVERSAL SCIENCE OF YOGA has been practised

for thousands of years in India, where people have retreated to
the peace of the Himalayas for yoga and meditation. Today many
people all over the world appreciate yoga as a very open and hol
istic system, which provides a positive philosophy for everyday
life. At the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House, people from around
the world have been finding their way back to a holistic lifestyle
in harmony with nature, benefitting from increased resistance
to stress, greater lung capacity, weight loss, regeneration and im
proved functioning of all body systems.
Today in the West there is no doubt about the healing and preventive benefits of yoga. Yoga gently brings body and mind into
harmony with the laws of nature and illuminates the search for
a deeper meaning in life. Everyone can practise yoga, no matter
their age, culture or religion.
Experience for yourself the benefits of a physical, mental and
spiritual regeneration, and discover how it feels to be a healthier
and more relaxed you. You can visit on your own, with a friend or
bring the entire family. Everybody in our team is dedicated to the
practice of y oga, and we are looking forward to being of service
to you during your stay.

The yoga of synthesis

Swami Vishnudevananda taught a synthesis of
the classical four paths of yoga in five simple
principles:

Yoga recommends the following four

practices to equally develop body, mind
and spirit:

KARM A YO G A
Acting selflessly, without thought of
personal gain or reward, purifies the
heart and sublimates the ego.

BHAKTI YO G A
The yoga of devotion appeals to the
emotional nature. Through prayer,
worship and ritual, the awareness
is focussed on the Divine as an
embodiment of love.

JN AN A YO G A
Vedanta philosophy explains how to
realize the union with the unchang
ing Reality of the Soul. The delusion
of diversity and all apparent contradictions disappears in the Light of
Reality.

RAJA YO G A/HAT HA YOGA

Asanas (yoga postures) and Prana
yama (breathing exercises) of Hatha
Yoga play a major role in the physical and mental control of yoga.
In Raja Yoga the main practice is
silent meditation. This brings about
physical and mental balance.

Proper Exercise (Asanas) enhances the flexibility

of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments and
stimulates circulation. Flexibility and strength of the
spine keep the body youthful.

Proper Breathing (Pranayama) connects the body

to its battery, the solar plexus, which is an enormous
storehouse of energy. Stress and depression can
be overcome by breathing more deeply and with
increased awareness.

Proper Relaxation (Savasana) If the body and mind

are subjected to constant overload, their performance suffers. Yoga relaxation techniques not only
help to relieve existing stress symptoms (like muscle
tension and breathlessness) but also help develop
resistance against external stress factors.

Proper Diet (Vegetarian) is healthy, natural and

simple to prepare. It is digestible and easy for the
body to absorb. It consists in proper food choices
which have the most positive effect on body and
mind, at the same time causing the least harm to
other living beings and the environment.

Positive Thinking & Meditation (Vedanta and

Dhyana) are the keys to peace of mind. By con
trolling the mind, we can eliminate negative thought
patterns and experience inner peace.

Practice

Enjoy the delicious vegetarian meals with friendly guests from around
the world. Later, there is time for the sauna, a massage, a walk along
one of the hiking trails, or just sitting back and reading a book on the
sunny terrace. Maybe you would like to help out a little in the Retreat
House, or perhaps talk with one of the senior yoga instructors. Complete
your day with some herbal tea before bedtime, or take a short walk on
the Retreat House hilltop before retiring to bed.

An ounce of practice is better than a ton

of theory.
Swami Sivananda
Yoga classes
The morning and afternoon yoga asana classes
consist of breathing exercises, Sun Salutation,
basic postures, variations and deep relaxation
under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
Individual corrections and detailed instructions
allow participants to perform the exercises safely
and in a relaxed manner, enhancing flexibility
and mobility.
Newcomers and rusty students are encour
aged to practise simple variations of the basic
poses. Special guidance is available for those
with back problems or other health conditions
such as general exhaustion. Advanced participants are encouraged to try classical variations
and hold the poses longer.
Weather permitting, the yoga classes are held
outside under large sun shades on our beautiful cedar platform, which affords a spectacular
view of the Wild Kaiser mountain range.
New to yoga?
First-time visitors to the Sivananda Yoga Retreat
House are given an introduction to the basic
principles of the yoga practice, meditation, the
philosophical aspects of yoga and the yoga
vacation schedule.
Meditation
The morning and evening meditation sessions
are the most peaceful hours at the Retreat
House. The practical guidance for positive
thinking and mental relaxation combined with
concentration exercises gradually lead to inner
peace. The chanting of Sanskrit mantras (heal
ing and energising sound sequences) deepens
the experience of peace. A reading from yoga
texts gives inspiring insights into yoga philosophy and psychology.
Silent walks
The guided silent walks at the Retreat House

offer moments to treasure the gentle rising

and setting of the sun, the various phases of
the moon, the hidden beauties of the valley,
the panoramic view of the Wild Kaiser and
Hohe Tauern mountains, the songs of many
bird species, the variety of trees, bushes and
medicinal plants along the footpath. The
breath deepens, body and mind relax, the
flexibility of the joints increases, the senses
regenerate and expand and the mind
rediscovers natural contentment and peace.
The vegetarian diet
Light, nutritious and freshly prepared meals are
an integral part of the yoga vacation. The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres many years of experience in both East and West have gone into
the development of menus which provide a
more balanced nutrient intake, increased vitality and better digestion.
Meals are served buffet-style and are made from
fresh, organic ingredients using only pure oils.
During your stay you will enjoy a variety of
whole grains, carefully cooked vegetables, a nice
variety of side salads, expertly prepared pulses,
dairy products from the best organic dairy farms
in Tyrol, home-made bread, jams and stewed
fruits as well as imaginative desserts.
You can get individual advice on how to
choose the right food combinations for your
constitution.
Learn how to cook
In regular cooking workshops you can learn
vegetarian alternatives for promoting physical
and mental well-being: a variety of recipes for
busy people, energy-giving breakfast ideas and
light dinners.
Youll learn how to make healthy, fresh and
energising meals at home in no time. There is
no additional lecture or workshop on days with
a cooking class.

Yoga Fitness

Daily workshops look at the main aspects of the yoga class in depth:
Muscle relaxation in the relaxation pose (Savasana) through auto
suggestion Enhanced flexibility of the spine and limbs through specific
stretching in the asanas Strengthening of back and abdominal muscles
for improved posture Specific asana cycles to make the pelvis and the
hips more flexible and strengthen the shoulder girdle Increased vital
capacity through deep breathing: starting with abdominal breathing and
full yogic breathing, you will be introduced step by step to the classical pranayama techniques, which lead to improved energy for both body
and mind.

Classical asana variations with individual guidance: Advanced variations

aimed at making the body more supple and allowing progress in the basic postures. In the workshops you will learn anatomical details of the
asana practice, helping you to get more out of the yoga classes. Special
yoga asanas for the back enhance flexibility and strengthen problem
areas. Step by step, youll learn the art of deep relaxation by making the
most of the short relaxation between the asanas and through the precise
use of the autosuggestion technique. The daily practice of meditation
and mantra chanting will turn your stay into a holistic yoga experience.

Often just little adjustments can lead to greater quality of life: Workshops
focussing on the shoulders, back and hips show you how to system
atically improve your flexibility in the yoga class. A test of the muscles
and a posture analysis give the motivation you need to make a change. Yoga offers a broad range of methods for strengthening the nervous

The daily yoga practice at home will give you fresh energy to make creative changes to your life. Workshops introduce the most effective exercises
for the daily routine, based on various asana sequences with a duration
of at least 15 minutes. An introduction to the practice of concentration
and meditation will teach you the time-honoured techniques of gaining
control over the mind a kind of mental hygiene for daily life. All this, together with a list of recommended reading, will equip you for successful

This programme focuses on strengthening body and mind for all-round

health. Yoga asanas provide an optimal development of muscle strength
and flexibility. This is excellent prevention against posture faults such as
lordosis, kyphosis or scoliosis, and helps improve existing posture problems.
In addition to learning the natural resting breath, you will learn pranayama
breathing exercises that systematically increase your vital capacity. Relaxation exercises strengthen the nervous and immune systems. Enjoy the
energising vegetarian food, specially adapted to the yoga practice.

Expand Your Asanas:

A Practice Week for the Intermediate Level
Participants will gradually learn more advanced asana variations in detailed
workshops with individual correction. Classical asana variations which focus
on flexibility, strength and endurance will be demonstrated and performed.
The highlight of the workshop is the meditative practice of holding each
pose longer. Daily pranayama practice develops the vital capacity of the
lungs and improves ones power of concentration. A lecture on the anatomical basics of the asana practice round off this special asana week.

Asanas: Deepening the Practice

We will take the time to do more advanced variations and hold the
poses as a meditative exercise, immersing ourselves in the asana experience. With step-by-step explanations and individual corrections. We
will concentrate on the Scorpion, the Full Wheel, the Pigeon, the Lateral
Forward Bend, the Tortoise, balance poses, Triangle variations and other
advanced variations from Swami Vishnudevanandas The Complete
Illustrated Book of Yoga.

Yoga of the Heart

With Nischala Joy Devi, USA
2016: Fri 5 August Sun 14 August
With certificate of participation for 133 training units
A comprehensive 9-day intensive course on teaching yoga to
cardiac and cancer patients. Recommended for yoga teachers and
health professionals with a yoga practice background.
56 hours of theory and practice daily, leading to an integral experience
that will enhance ones teaching skills and ones own practice.

Swami Vishnudevananda developed the first yoga teachers training course

(TTC) in the West in 1969 as part of his vision of universal peace: The
more people experience peace within, the more this peace will manifest
in outward action. In this way, a glow of peace envelops the world. Today
the yoga teachers training courses are under the supervision of senior
instructors who were personally trained by Swami Vishnudevananda.
The goal of this training programme is to produce qualified and inspiring
yoga teachers who are able to draw on their own practice and personal
discipline in imparting the yoga experience to others. To date, over 35,000
certified yoga teachers have completed the Sivananda Yoga Teachers
Training Course, with another 1,000 graduates worldwide each year.
