To the Editor:

William E. Gladstone, a British statesman once described the U.S. Constitution as the
most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpose of man. In a
world of change and struggle, the American people have no more precious possession than this
great document. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing debate on whether the U.S Constitution is
exceptional or not. I strongly believe that is exceptional.
Our nations fundamental set of laws - known as the Constitution - is the oldest
constitution still in use today. It was written in 1787. Although it is believed by some to be out of
date and not applicable to our society today, true and correct foundational principles of a
government system with three branches that keep each others powers in balance will always be
applicable, through any time period, and will ensure order, liberty, and equality. This inspired
legal document well defines the powers of the national government, and establishes protection
for the rights of the states and of every individual.
During the time period the U.S Constitution was written, it became a standard model for
many other countries due to its uniqueness. A few years ago, Time magazine calculated that of
the 170 countries that exist today, more than 160 have written charters modeled directly or
indirectly on the U.S. version.
Through the years, the Constitution has expanded and developed to meet the changing
needs of the United States; however, its core is still concise and clearly states and explains the
rights and powers of the different branches of the government, and the powers and rights of the
states and the people.

Another criticism of the Constitution is that the amendment process takes too much time;
however, it safeguards the Constitutions fundamental principles from hasty and unnecessary
change. People today have opinions that differ with the principles that were fundamental at the
time that the Constitution was written. So the amendment process makes sure that the only
changes that are made are very thoroughly evaluated by many different branches to make sure
that the changes will only positively contribute to the Constitution.
We may not think that our U.S Constitution is exceptional at this time, but that may be
because we are not interpreting it and following it as correctly as we should or as we used to. We
have disregarded, and in various ways misinterpreted the real principles of order, liberty, and
equality that the Constitution was originally founded upon.
