Experiment 1: Identification of Organic Compounds using UV-Vis and IR Spectroscopy

The purpose of this experiment is to provide you with an opportunity to implement the skills you
have gained from the first two chapters of the Analytical Chemistry for Engineers course. In this
experiment you will identify 12 compounds (A-L) using your knowledge of UV-Vis and IR
spectroscopy. The following are a list of possible compounds:

You are expected to go to the Analytical Laboratory and acquire the experimental procedure for
using the UV-Vis and IR Spectrometers and submit a copy of the procedure to your lecturer prior to
performing the experiments.
You must submit a lab report, which is composed of an abstract, introduction, theory, procedure,
results, discussion, conclusion and references to your lecturer one week after performing your
experiment.
In your results section you are expected to identify compounds A-L and, name them and justify your
identification using the information from the experiments and the following data:
