It passes his childhood between
Bolivia and Peru and when finishing its
primary studies collaborates in newspapers The
Chronicle and The Industry. In 1952 a titled play

It studies Letters and Right in the Greater National University of San Marcos
and begins professionally to collaborate in newspapers and magazines,
being publisher of Notebooks of Composition and the magazine Literature.

Complutensian University of Madrid, where he obtains the title of Doctor in
Philosophy and Letters. A year later is transferred to Paris, and there it

Europe, residing in Paris, London and Barcelona.
In 1975 it initiates a series of cinematographic works, and in March of that
year Member of Number in the Real Peruvian Academy of the Language is
chosen.

In 1976 he was elected president of PEN Club International, a position he


held until 1979.
In Peru presents the television program The Tower of Babel and in 1983
chaired the Investigation Committee of the case Uchuraccay, dedicated to
solving the murder of eight journalists. A late eighties enters the world of
politics in Peru and in 1990 he returned to London, where he resumed his
literary activity.
In March 1993 obtained Spanish citizenship, without renouncing the
Peruvian. Collaborate in the newspaper El Pas and cultural magazine Letras
Libres.
In 1994 he was appointed member of the Royal Spanish Academy and that
same year he won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize; is subsequently
recognized honorary doctor at many universities. His work has been
translated into more than 30 languages.
