Strains and

Sprains

By Sarah Fox

What is a Strain vs a
Sprain?
A sprain is a stretch
and/or tear of a
ligament, the fibrous
band of connective
tissue that joins the
end of one bone with
another.

A strain is an injury
of a muscle and/or
tendon. Tendons are
fibrous cords of
tissue that attach
muscles to bone.

Victims

Most common among athletes

Ranging from teenagers to professionals
Mostly people who are very active on a daily
basis or that play a certain sport.
Best way to avoid injury is to stretch before
intense physical activity and to give your body
time to rest and heal.

Symptoms

Symptoms of strains and sprains are similar

They include pain at the area of damage,
muscle spasms, swelling, and trouble moving
the muscle.

Causes/ Risks

Caused by constant physical stress on body

and this greatly increases risk of over working
a muscle or ligament.
Or an awkward motion or pull on that certain
muscle or ligament can damage it.
Without proper stretching and ample healing
time for your body you become more at risk
for injury.

Treatment

Treatment for strains and sprains are very

similar and it can involve
Resting the injured area
Applying ice
Wearing a bandage or brace that will compress
the area
Medicine
Other treatment includes light exercise and
physical therapy.
