INTRODUCTION
Whether youre looking to start out in real estate or want to update your skills, now is the perfect time to study and make
the most of your career. Our practical and comprehensive training gives you the skills and knowledge youll need for this
competitive and rewarding industry. The qualications you gain will help you achieve a challenging career that offers variety
and the potential for excellent nancial rewards.
Our courses are designed by experienced teaching staff, providing a high level of expertise and support for your study.
We offer the following real estate qualications:
National Certicate in Real Estate (Salesperson) (Level 4)
National Certicate in Real Estate (Branch Manager) (Level 5)
National Diploma in Real Estate (Agent) (Level 5).
Although these qualications are stand alone, many of the courses are common to more than one of the qualications.
Once you have completed your qualication you can apply to the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) to gain the
appropriate licence. You will need to consent to a police check when you apply for your licence. Visit the REAA website
reaa.govt.nz for current requirements, including necessary industry experience.
QUALIFICATION
Once you have completed all the units in the National Certicate in Real Estate (Salesperson) Level 4, you can apply to the
New Zealand Qualications Authority (NZQA) for your certicate. Visit nzqa.govt.nz for more information.

QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE
To gain the National Certicate in Real Estate (Branch Manager), you must complete 21 compulsory unit standards. You

QUALIFICATION

All of the units of the branch manager qualication are included in the National Diploma in Real Estate (Agent).
QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE
To gain the National Diploma in Real Estate (Agent) Level 5, you must complete a total of at least 170 credits. The majority of
these credits will come from the 27 compulsory units. A minimum of three appraisal elective units, one each from business,
residential and rural appraisal is also required. In addition you must complete further units selected from the agent electives
listed below to achieve your 170 credits.
We recommend you enrol in one block of courses at a time.

This section applies only to licensed practitioners in the industry namely salespeople, branch managers and agents.
EXEMPTION
If you have completed a National Certicate or National
Diploma you are exempt from CE requirements for the
year in which you completed, and the following calendar
year.
For example, if you completed the National Certicate
(Salesperson) or the Branch Manager or Agents
qualication in 2014, you are exempt from CE in 2014
and 2015.
NON-VERIFIABLE CE
Non-veriable CE requires you to complete 10 hours of
in-house or industry training, to attend relevant conferences
or to undergo personal professional development. You can
achieve your non-veriable CE with Open Polytechnic by
completing one real estate related unit standard.
REFRESHER TRAINING
If your real estate licence is suspended for 12 months or
more, you will need to do a refresher course and complete
CE during the calendar year that your licence is renewed.

RECORD-KEEPING
If you choose Open Polytechnic as your CE provider, we
will hold records of your veried CE that you complete
with us. You will need to submit this information to the
REAA when you re-license.
VERIFIABLE CE
Veriable CE requires you to complete a 10-hour online
course or attend a two-day workshop. If you are not able
to attend the full workshop, you may be able to complete
some of your training online.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Assessment
All units are internally assessed and there are no external
examinations. Assessments must be word processed and
submitted online and some assessments may include an
oral or contact (role play) component.
Course materials
As well as paper-based course material, some of our
courses include practical exercises, e-learning and
specially prepared DVDs. You will also need to access our
student website, Online Campus.
Study time
All units have a credit value. This helps you work out how
much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours
of study for each credit. For example, a ve-credit unit
standard generally requires 50 hours of study.
Admission requirements
To enter the real estate qualication you must have a
minimum of eight NCEA Level 2 credits in English, four
in writing and four in reading, or be able to demonstrate
equivalent knowledge or skills.
English language
English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic.
You will need to be able to read and write well in English
so that you can understand course materials and also
submit written assessments. There are criteria that must
be met if English is not your rst language. For more

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
We have a fund to help students who are in nancial need
and have no other option for nancial support. This fund is

Licensing restrictions
Criminal convictions, bankruptcy and previous loss of
licence may stop you from becoming a real estate licensee.
Before you enrol we recommend you check the licensing
rules and regulations in the Real Estate Agents Act 2008.

Learning support
YOUR TUTOR
You will have a tutor for each unit you study. Your tutor
is there to help you through the course work, make sure
you have understood the study material and check your
progress. You can contact them on our freephone or by
