Headmasters Newsletter 24
15th January 2015
We are now in the middle of Receptions pet fortnight, and a
highlight on Wednesday was the participation in the class by
the very friendly, white and quite small dog belonging to a well
-known Year 2 teacher. Bonnie went down extremely well and
was popular with all the class, most of whom would
definitely vote for her to be a permanent member of the class.

The children have been learning about all types of pets and
about how to look after them. Not just for the first few days
of course but for a long time.
The Reception classroom has as well of course a proud history
of the incubation and hatching of chicks, and the next batch
are due to start in the next few weeks. We shall await the
arrival of the tiny, cheeping balls of fluff.
On Thursday, swimming lessons started, and this term these
are for Years 3 and 4. Swimming is such an important life skill
of course, and it is good to see the various classes taking the
lessons. Last terms swimmers were Years 2 and 5, and next
term is the turn of Years 1 and 6.

While on the topic of play, we are delighted to have

received some new playground equipment (balls, hoops
etc) courtesy of the school council who raised funds last
term. Well done to them and Im sure the children will put
them to great use.
At the end of last term we were due to award the Bronte
Friends Achievement Cup. Although this is a little overdue,
it gave us great pleasure this morning in assembly to award
the cup to Yuvraj Dhaliwal for his triumph over adversity
following an unfortunate leg injury. He remained cheerful
and was keen to get back to school even though moving
about was, and still is, not easy for him.

Another important life skill is the ability to observe and

appreciate shape, patterns and colour. These areas form part
of weekly art lessons, taught by Mrs Lonergan and Miss Carter.
One thing that has always intrigued me is how artists convey
curved surfaces. There will soon be a perfect demonstration of
this with a display in the Hall of spheres, drawn by each pupil in
the school. Do have a look when you are next in: there has
been careful and subtle attention to detail and the spheres all
have great depth and solidity. It promises to be quite a sight.
As part of their DT topic this term, Year 1 have been looking at
playground equipment and will be making models of
various pieces throughout the term. To help them with ideas,
Mrs Nash, Mrs Hilditch, Mrs Kalyan, Mrs Rowe and Mrs
Russell, parent of Max, braved the January winds and walked
the children to Woodlands Park. Here, they investigated the
equipment in the park, studied the way in which it moved and
the materials used to make itand at the same time managed
a bit of a play as well!
