Character Analysis
Petruchio seems brash, arrogant and compulsive, with no respect for anyone else.Faith,
sirrah, an youll not knock, Ill ring it; Ill try how you can sol, fa, and sing it. (Act 1,
Scene II, the Taming of the Shrew)He is the exact opposite of Lucentio, who is love sick
and gentle. Petruchio seems to have no kindness in him at all, in fact this is the
impression he gives most people when he literally buys Katharina. Katharina is a shrew
that scares off any visitor from her fathers house. Mates, maid! How mean you that? No
mates for you, unless you were of gentler, milder mould. (Act 1, Scene I, the Taming of
the Shrew.) Both also seem to be the type of people that would be thrown out of a party.
Nay, let them go, a couple of quiet ones. (Act 3, Scene II, the Taming of the Shrew) People
also doubt that Petruchio and Katharina would even make a good match. Of all the mad
matches never was the like. (Act 3, Scene II, the Taming of the Shrew) Petruchio is a
Dynamic character because his personality is always changing. At the beginning of the
play Petruchio makes himself to be selfish, and even as shrewish as Katharina. As
Gremio said, Tut, shes a lamb, a dove, a fool to him! (Act 3, Scene II, the Taming of the
Shrew) So Katharina was compared to his nature and was considered docile. Petruchio
uses his false shrewish personality to change his wife Katharina. He even goes as far as
fooling all of the other characters that he is the male version of Katharina. Petruchio
tames Katharina the same way he tames is hunting falcons. By depriving the animal of

food and sleep, make the falcon so fatigued it until it will do anything for food and sleep.
He also forces Katharina to agree with anything that he says, even if it is completely
outrageous. But in reality he is a gentleman and an honorable one at that.
We see a great change in Petruchios personality he goes from acting like a pirate to
acting as if he were the son of a noble. Katharina is a Dynamic character and the main
problem, how can she be tamed? She is such a problem that her father wants her to be
married of and restricts any one from marrying her sister. But by the end it is Katharina
who is lady like and Bianca who is shrewish. In truth Petruchio and Katharina are perfect
for each other. Katharina shows a great amount of respect for Petruchio. Also after
Petruchio tears up the dresss that Katharina has picked out Petruchio buys her a more
spectacular dress. In the end the both complement each other. Katharina gives a lecture to
Bianca and the widow whom Hortensio has married. Fie, fie! Unknit that threat'ning
unkind brow And dart not scornful glances from those eyes to wound thy lord, thy king,
thy governor. It blots thy beauty as frosts do bite the meads, Confounds thy fame as
whirlwinds shake fair buds, (Act %, Scene II, The Taming of the Shrew).
