Shakespeare

Induction
1. The trick played on Sly is that they make him think he is a rich lord when he is really just
a drunk. They do this for fun and their own amusement.
2. It is considered a play within a play, because Shakespeare has set an introduction with a
play happening. While sly, is watching a play “The Taming of The Shrew”

Act 1 Scene 1
3. Lucentio has come to Padua to go to school and make a name for himself

act like Lucentio, go to school as him, and also hit on Bianca.

Act 1 Scene 2
8. Petruchio has come to Padua to find a wife; to wive and thrive
9.
Katherine Bianca

Wildcat, shrew, scolding tongue, loud, Beautiful, timid, modesty, how women
outspoken, untamed, unacceptable for a should be
woman in Shakespeare’s time
10. Petruchio's monologue reveals that he is not scared of Katherine, nor intimidated, and
has faced many scarier things
11. Gremio and Hortensio’s reaction is that they think that Luciento is not a big deal, and
nothing to worry about
12. They talk about her like taming an animal, and that she is cursed, they belittle her and
dehumanize her.
13. They are indebted to Petruchio because he is the only one willing to marry Katherine
14. Grumio, the servant of Petruchio, plays a comedic role, and Tranio, plays the role of
Lucientio to try to help Lucentio woo Bianca, Biondello, does not do a lot for the story, he
is mainly just a servant.

Act 2
1. Katherine is trying to know who Bianca likes more, Hortensio and Gremio. She does this
by trying to beat the answer out of her.
2. Petruchio describes her as a raging fire, which he can tame, this tells us that he is proud,
and is not afraid of the things he has heard about Katherine
3. Hortensio becomes Litio and becomes a music tutor. Lucentio becomes Cambio and
becomes a poetry tutor.
4. Tranio assumes the role of Lucientio, and is instructed by Lucientio to try and woo
Bianca, Baptista does not know who he is and thinks he is a stranger, he says “but
gentle sir, methinks you walk like a stranger. May I be so bold to know the cause of your
coming?”(line 81-82)
5. They talk about Petruchio wanting to marry Katherine, and how much money he will be
receiving from him in the marriage
6. Hortensio is injured because Katherine broke the lute on his head.
7. They didn't get along they were making fun of eachother back and forth and attacking each
other verbally
8. Pertiutio claimed that he and Katherine got along and that she was all over him the whole
time they were talking, which in reality never happened.
9. The decision is that tranio (acting as lucentio) will marry Bianca, if he can bring his father to
verify the things he said were true, since they are not true, tranio must find a fake father.

Act 3 scene 1:
1. Her decision was to let lucentio tutor her first, as hortensio tunes his instrument, this
shows that she favours lucentio over hortensio, or that
2. Lucentio's translation of his lesson was him confessing his love and real identity, with
Bianca’s translation being that she does not know him and does not trust him as of now,
but to not take this as a no.
3. Hortensio's message was for Bianca to become his wife, or he would die, Bianca’s
response was that she did not like the gamut, which meant that she did not accept his
offer

Act 3 scene 2:
4. Kate weeps because she is embarrassed, due to Petruchio not showing up. This shows
that Kate has feelings, and is not all a shrew/ is changing.
5. Petruchio is dressed in an old jerkin, a pair of old breeches thrice turned, a pair boots
that have been candle cases, one buckled, one laced, one girth six times. pierced.
Baptista’s reaction is calling him “an eye-sore to our solemn festival” (shakespeare, 91).
6. Petruchio tells them that he will not change clothes and that, and said, should I rush in
thus, meaning that he came quickly.
7. Lucientio’s plan was to run away and get married to Bianca, if Hortensio was not there.
8. Gremio calls Petruchio a groom instead of a bridegroom, which is just calling him
aggressive, this is ironic because you would expect a bridegroom to be aggressive.
9. Pertrutio acts like he doesn’t care about this wedding and that this wedding isn’t a big
deal so he doesn't need to care, he also hit the priest and swore.
10. He leaves the wedding kidnapping Kate with a sword, he does this to manipulate Kate,
since she did not want to leave, as well as assert dominance, and he tells her that he
owns her.
11. They were perfect mad matches and did not worry about Kate screaming, and went to
eat.
12. Yes, Katherine is less of a “shrew”, from what Petruchio does to her. and one starts to
feel empathy for her, through her dialogues, and how Petruchio is treating her.
Act 4 scene 1
1. Curtis calls Grumio a three inch fool, meaning he is short, Curtis also calls Grumio coldly.
He uses this to make us understand curtis’ personality.
2. She fell off her house, and fell under it, and got covered in mud, Petruchio got mad at
Grumio for this and started hitting him; irrational actions.
3. Pertruchio treats his servants in an ill way he hits them he insults them and ridicules
them, Kate tells him that the food his servants made him wasn’t bad but if he was in a
better mood it would be better.
4. Our favourite insult was heedless joltheads which means careless fools.
5. Petruchio's plan is to not let Kate eat or sleep, which is going to be his way of breaking
her spirit, with his end goal to “tame” the shrew.

Act 4 scene 2
6. Tranio and Hortensio’s conversation concerning Bianca is that Hortensio will leave her
alone and go marry a widow, as long as Tranio also leaves her alone for Lucientio who is
playing Cambio, their decision was to both leave Bianca alone, this is ironic because we
know Tranio does not actually want to marry Bianca, and is doing it for Lucientio
7. Hortensio’s plan for marriage is to marry a rich widow, who is already interested in him
and to go to Petruchio’s taming school.
8. The merchant plays Lucientio’s dad or Vincentio in Tranio’s plan, he gets him to play
along by telling him his home land is at war with Padua (mantua). He gets scared, but
still wants to conduct business in Padua, so he takes the identity of Vincentio

Act 4 scene 3
9. Her opening line reveals that she is famished, meaning she is hungry and is not being
given food; she is being mistreated
10. Petruchio thinks the hat and dress are fine, but he says that they are not right in front of
kate, so she doesn’t get what she wants for the wedding, he does this to break her spirit
further

with kate. Petruchio won by telling her that if she didn’t agree with him that they would
not go back
15. The trick that they play on Vincentio is that they tell him that he looks like a female.
Act 5 scene 1
1. It is dramatic irony because we know that the merchant is not the real Vincentio, which
no one else knows
2. Vincentio thinks that Tranio killed his son
3. Lucientio and Bianca ask pardon of their fathers, because they got married without them
knowing/their consent
4. At first they ask why they did not ask for permission, then they forget about it

Act 5 scene 2
6. The widow tells kate that her husband is troubled with a shrew, Petruchio tells her to put
her down(insult her)
7. Bianca’s attitude is more like old Kates, and is acting more like a “shrew”
8. The bet was whose wife was going to come when they were called for. They all thought
that their wives would come except for Kate, in reality none came but Kate.
9. The message of Kate's monologue is that a wife must obey their husbands
10. Yes, we think it is sincere, this is through how she explains and talks about being
obedient, and how she talks to Petruchio; she has been tamed.
11. We think that Kate is happier now, we think this because of her intense monologue on
being a good wife, and how she now talks to Petruchio. At the beginning she was
constantly yelling and hurting others, showing that she was unhappy.
