An Introduction to my
Family
Hello, my name is Hawa Dirie. My
mother Faiza and father Ahmed are
immigrants to Canada. They both came
here as refuges because of the civil war
in Somalia. My parents choose to come
to Canada for our amazing government,
and incredible education system. They
wanted to give me and my two brothers
the best chance of a bright future they
could, But thats not what well be talking
about in this power point. Many people
have a awful perspective on Somalia
because of the war, and because of that
they cant see its beauty. Although l love
our wonderful l country, I would like to
talk a little about Somalia and its culture.

Where is Somalia?

Somalia is located in eastern


Africa.
Borders the Indian ocean.
East of Djibouti , Ethiopia, and
Kenya.
Somalia comes in contact with
the equator at its very southern
city Kismaayo.

Food
Some traditional foods/ beverages in
Somalia are:
Sambuse
Halwa
Canjeero
Shaah
Malawah

Religion
The state religion in Somalia is Islam.
Almost of the population are Sunni
Muslims.
Somalias capital is the home of the
biggest mosque in the horn of Africa
( Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti)
The Mosque of Islamic Solidarity.
Only about 0.1 % of the population
practice a religion other then Islam,
most being Christianity.

The official languages in


Somalia are Somali and
Arabic.
The first language is Somali.
Some of the population
speak, Italian.
This is because of the
colonization by Italy back
from 1889 1936
Many Somali words are
actually Italian.

Somaliland, from back when
Somalia was an Italian colony.

A conclusion
I hope now, you can see that Somalia is an
incredibly interesting and filled with rich
history. Not just a county in war with its self.
