Our Call to Action: Effectively Educating Black

Males
Professional Development Session Objectives:
1. Deliver teacher training focused on multiple research based
instructional strategies and climate/behavioral supports that have
allowed for the progress of black males in our high school environment.
2. Model successful literacy strategies that have increased writing and
reading skills in our school community.
3. Offer honest, heartfelt and emotional insights of educators career
journeys in loving, teaching, and working with black male students.
Overview of Professional Development Session:
The goals of the session embrace our call to action on how the South Lake
High School community is uplifting, transforming, inspiring and educating our
black males. Based on our high school communitys journey over the last
four years, we have learned that it takes more than teacher lounge
conversations and district committees to address the achievement gap that
exists among black males.
This presentation will offer the opportunity for educators to engage in
personal reflections and discussions that will allow them to gain introspection
about their mindsets and professional practice. Personal accounts, authentic
videos, collaborative activities, modeling and practice of strategies will be
implemented. Participants will be provided resources and materials to utilize
for their action plans in their classrooms and schools.
