Soda shrugged. I dont know. Its just...I cant stand to hear y

Greaser are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive
old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have gang
fights once in a while (3).

throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper
for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society
the next(3).

Commentary:
I wouldnt have felt so embarrassed if
they had been greasy girls -- I might
even have helped old Dallas (21).

Ponyboy thinks that no decent girl would look at him; that

is, the only girls he could hang out with are the greaser girls.
This is doubtlessly a fault of the distinction between social
groups and classes.

Commentary:
I thought its money that separated
us (37-38).

No, it wasnt Cherry the Soc who was

helping us, it was Cherry the dreamer
who watched sunsets and couldnt stand
fights (86).

In the Outsiders, society and class plays a sole role in

forming the characters. The difference between the rich and
the poor is difficult for both groups to cross, and the tragic
part is that even if they feel affection for one another, there
is no way for them to become friends.

Commentary:
Ponyboy believes, still, that there is something that
distinguishes Socs from greasers. The spy who helped them
cannot possibly be the Soc but the dreamer who watched
the same sunset as him. The conviction of hatred is set
between the greasers and Socs and is never reconciliated.
