Hazard essay
In 1906, San Francisco was shaken by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. One of the
deadliest and most expensive earthquakes in us history, leaving more than 3,000
people dead and more than 225,000 people homeless. Also 296 miles of the California
coastline was affected. This was an economic down fall for california.
The slipping at the plate boundary caused 296 miles of the San Andreas fault to
move and slide. Which caused fires to start and made buildings collapse. Also the
buildings later looked at deeply had structural damage. All of this damage to San
Francisco was not good because it was 80% destroyed.
This earthquake was so devastating for California in that it affected so much of
the coastline. There were many life's lost and many other life's affected by the fires and
building collapsing. This cost California 400 million dollars and took. more than 3,000
lives. The 1906 earthquake destroyed 28,000 homes and countless businesses.
In 1906, the plates slid past each other on a transform plate boundary. This type
of earthquake is not an uncommon occurrence. This fault goes off every decade and
moves very little every day. This event gave engineers the understanding to build
buildings that can withstand earthquakes.
