ECOLOGICAL
AWARENESS
What is Ecosystem?
 An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants,
animals, and other organisms, as well as weather
and landscapes, work together to form a bubble of
life.

The Pollution We Are Facing

 The greatest pollution we are facing

is ocean pollution.

 China
 Indonesia
 Philippines
Nature's Retribution
 Typhoon Ketsana, known in the
Philippines as Tropical Storm Ondoy,
was the second-most devastating
tropical cyclone of the 2009 Pacific
typhoon season, causing $1.09 billion
in damages and 747 fatalities, only
behind Morakot earlier in the season,
which caused 789 deaths and damages
worth $6.2 billion.
 Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as
Super Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most
powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. On
making landfall, Haiyan devastated portions
of Southeast Asia, particularly the
Philippines. Wikipedia
 Total fatalities: 6,340
 Highest wind speed: 315 km/h
 Date: 3 November 2013 – 11 November 2013
 Category: Super typhoon
 Damage: $2.98 billion (2013 USD)
 In June 1991, the second-largest volcanic
eruption of the twentieth century* took place
on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, a
mere 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of
the capital city Manila. Up to 800 people
were killed and 100,000 became homeless
following the Mount Pinatubo eruption, which
climaxed with nine hours of the eruption on
June 15, 1991. On June 15, millions of tons of
sulfur dioxide were discharged into the
atmosphere, resulting in a decrease in the
temperature worldwide over the next few
years.
 The Moro Gulf Earthquake
 With a 7.9 magnitude and almost
3,000 casualties, this Mindanao
earthquake is officially the strongest
and deadliest earthquake in
Philippine history. Almost 40, 000
people in Regions 9 and 12 were also
left homeless by this tragedy.
 The eruption of Mt. Krakatoa
 The eruption of Krakatoa, or Krakatau, in
August 1883 was one of the most deadly
volcanic eruptions of modern history. It is
estimated that more than 36,000 people
died. Many died as a result of thermal
injury from the blasts and many more
were victims of the tsunamis that followed
the collapse of the volcano into the
caldera below sea level. The eruption also
affected the climate and caused
temperatures to drop all over the world.
 1958 Lituya Bay, Alaska earthquake and megatsunami
 A tsunami with a record run-up height of 1720 feet occurred in
Lituya Bay, Alaska
 On the night of July 9, 1958, an earthquake along the
Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle loosened about 40
million cubic yards (30.6 million cubic meters) of rock high
above the northeastern shore of Lituya Bay. This mass of rock
plunged from an altitude of approximately 3000 feet (914
meters) down into the waters of Gilbert Inlet (see map below).
The impact force of the rockfall generated a local tsunami that
crashed against the southwest shoreline of Gilbert Inlet.
 The wave hit with such power that it swept completely over the
spur of land that separates Gilbert Inlet from the main body of
Lituya Bay. The wave then continued down the entire length of
Lituya Bay, over La Chaussee Spit and into the Gulf of Alaska.
The force of the wave removed all trees and vegetation from
elevations as high as 1720 feet (524 meters) above sea level.
Millions of trees were uprooted and swept away by the wave.
This is the highest wave that has ever been known.
 Typhoon Tip was the largest tropical cyclone on record, with a
diameter of 1,380 mi (2,220 km)—almost double the previous record
of 700 mi (1,130 km) set by Typhoon Marge in August 1951. At its
largest, Tip was nearly half the size of the contiguous United States.
 Highest winds: 10-minute sustained: 260 km/h ...
 Lowest pressure: 870 hPa (mbar); 25.69 inHg; ...
 Dissipated: October 24, 1979
 Formed: October 4, 1979
