something dangerous or
potentially shocking.
e.g. A man deciding whether to cut a
red wire or a blue wire on a bomb
counting down.

by what they have
seen.
This can be visual or
audial.
e.g. a joke or
slapstick moment.

Audience asks
questions about
what they have seen
and what they may
see in the future.
e.g. Who is that
strange man in the
background of every
shot?

Empathy- you feel
the same.
Sympathy- you
feel sorry
for the character

CATHARS
IS
Making yourself feel
less emotional by
watching/ doing
something scary.
Resolution is the key
to catharsis (death of
a character)
e.g. watching a horror
movie, riding a
rollercoaster.

Severe surprise!
Often a bit scary.
e.g. an unexpected explosion
