A) Explain why the U.S.S.R decided to invade Afghanistan
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in order to gain the communist government of the
People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan against the growing insurgency. The Soviet
Union feared that the communist party would be lost in Afghanistan. The United States
were the dominating super power at this point and the Soviet Union wanted to take
control back into their hands.
B) Describe the international consequences of the invasion
Peshawar Seven insurgents received military training from Pakistan and China
United States, United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia gave millions of dollars and
weapons to assist with the war so they were losing money and valuable weapons
Tehran Eight alliance received support from the Islamic Republic of Iran
The war ended with 850,000-1.5 million civilians to die
Millions of people also had to leave Afghanistan causing potential over
population in other countries
Moscow had high military costs

domestic policy was the most important factor in the Soviets decision to
leave the war
