Last months event - May

Holdgate Windmill
Despite the filthy weather, we had a really good turnout for our May meeting,
including a lot of new faces.
It was worth the effort: our engaging speakers were Helen Hoult and Richard Green,
two of the original 15 volunteers who formed the Holgate Windmill Preservation
Society in 2001. Theyd come to tell us about the history of this York landmark and
the story of how the renovation work was accomplished.
After the windmill closed in the 1930s it fell into a state of disrepair: by 2001 it had
no sails, the doors and windows were rotten, the brickwork was cracking and the
cap was disintegrating (it had to have a hair net to stop bits falling off!) quite a
challenge. Richard a former engineer brought the story of the restoration to life,
explaining the technical aspects really well and expressing his appreciation of all
the experts, such as wheelwrights, who were involved.
The job was completed in 2012 at a cost of 550,000, but thats not the end of the
story. It costs12,000 a year to keep the windmill running, money which comes
from visitors, society membership and sales of flour. This is produced regularly by
the volunteers using top quality wheat from Norfolk Theyd brought some to sell
which we snapped up in double quick time: Im looking forward to next month,
when we can compare notes on how our baking turned out!

Both the Web Page and Facebook presence is nearly completed, sorry its taking so
long. I will demo the site as soon as possible and send details to all interested
members. If you would like to be part of the Facebook closed group; for keeping up
to date with items via this medium, just let me know so I can include your details.

I would also like to update all the details we have for members, to help keep us
cater for everyone Id also like to ask if you could fill in and return the attached
form letting us know little more about what you want to do in your WI.

New members the more the merrier!

We are delighted to see so many new faces at the meetings, but please spread the
word. Anyone coming along as a visitor will pay the bargain price of 3.00 per
evening (not Pub and Natters) and they are able to do that on 3 occasions in any
one year.

Have a chat at a Pub and Natter Evening

Creative ideas for 2016

Do you know the difference between a Slippery Hitch and a Fishermans Bend, do
you now lots about the history of bow-ties? No! But perhaps you do know
something the rest of us would love to learn about (and if not you then a friend or
family member?)
If you do, come and have a chat with Hester or Sandie.
(P.S. A group in Bristol recently learnt about the history of belly-dancing with
demos!)

Denman Bursaries
There are a number of bursaries available for all members of the WI to apply for.
These are mainly used to fund a residential courses at Denham for further details
