PMK DEMONSTRATION ON 22nd JUNE SEEKING

REVIVAL OF STATE INFORMATION COMMISSION
The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission(TNSIC)constituted to eradicate corruption and ensure
transparency in administration had become redundant. Corruption is rampant in this organization
devised to eradicate corruption and there is no transparency in its functioning.
The Commission is deliberately kept redundant to prevent the exposure of the corruptions and scandals
of the Tamil Nadu government. The TNSIC which should have one Chief Commissioner and 10
Information Commissioners, is having only 4 Commissioners as of now. Hence most of the appeal
petitions on Right to Information Act are kept pending without hearing. Though the numbers of the
appeal petitions had crossed many lakhs, the Tamil Nadu government is not inclined to activate the
commission.
It is said that the Chief Minister is personally responsible for the non-functioning of the Commission.
As per the RTI Act, the Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioners are appointed
by a Committee comprising of the Chief Minister, a Minister nominated by the Chief Minister and the
leader of the Opposition. It is said that since the Chief Minister is unwilling to meet the leader of the
Opposition in person, she is refusing to convene the Selection Committee and that is the reason for
not appointing even a single member in the last 3 years.
It is totally unacceptable that personal likes and dislikes hamper the functioning of democratic
institutions. The non-functioning of the Commission had caused many harms. Pattali Makkal Katchi
demands that the meeting of the Selection Committee is called for at the earliest and the Chief
Information Commissioner and other Commissioners are appointed. PMK will conduct a continuous
slogan shouting demonstration on the 22.06.2015 in Chennai. I myself will be presiding over the
demonstration.

A strong Information Commission is essential for a clean, transparent administration. I request RTI
activists, legal experts, civil society representatives and all those who want to fight corruption to join
this historical struggle to eradicate corruption from Tamil Nadu.
