Synthesis

By Angela Lazaro, Lizette Pedraza

Process/Demonstrations
For our demonstration we will be experiment
diet coke and menthols. When those two
combine together it will create an erosion or
explosion.

Materials
-Mentos
-Diet Coke made up of...

Carbonated Water

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Caramel Color

Phosphoric Acid

Natural Flavors

Caffeine

Aspartame (NutraSweet)

Potassium Benzoate

Citric acid

Procedure
1. Get a diet coke, not opened
2. Buy some mentos.
3. Open bottle, add 2-5 mentos
4. Let it erupt!

Hypothesis
If we drop menthols in diet coke then it will
create a chemical reaction.

Chemical Equation

Info
- allowing carbon dioxide bubbles to form with the rapidity and quantity
-rough surface of the Mentos candy helps speed the reaction.
-Each Mentos candy has thousands of small pores on its surface which disrupt
the polar attractions between water molecules, creating thousands of ideal
nucleation sites for the gas molecules to congregate.
- The candies are fairly dense objects and tend to sink rapidly in the soda. If
you crush the Mentos, so it doesnt sink much at all, you wont get a very
dramatic reaction.
