Quadrant 1R:

Connect phase
Play Number Rock to open the lesson
Use finger-flashes to count
Quadrant 1L:
Examine phase
Do Quick Practices. Use a number chart representing numbers 1-10, then
11-20, utilizing 5-groups + more, then 10-groups + more.
Quadrant 2R

Image phase
Read Swan Harbor, by Laura Rankin, a counting book to count numbers 1-
20. Count up then back down; recognize the +1 pattern and the -1 pattern of
the numbers we read.
Quadrant 2L

Define phase
Lecture: focus on numbers 1-10, values and sequence.
Students will read it, write it, show it with each number.
Quadrant 3R

Try phase
Students will use manipulatives to build and show numbers 1-10.
Teacher records the +1 and the -1 patterns as students build each number.
Students chant the number patterns as we finish.
Quadrant 3L

Extend phase
Practice choices:
1. Play number BINGO game.
2. Write numbers in sequence, identify and match numbers to correct
group of dots (worksheet).
3. Make a Number Book.
4. Create a math story and act it out.
Quadrant 4R

Refine phase
Pair and Share activity
o Students share their work with a partner.
o Students engage in a collaborative conversation, asking questions,
revising or assisting with finishing the product.
Quadrant 4L

Integrate phase
Students share a page from their number books, or a portion of their
projects with the class.
Original project (if applicable) is placed in student portfolio to be celebrated
at conferences.
