Joining Hands
The Plan
For this Joining Hands project I would like to create a school/community
service-learning project called Project Connect. This project fits in
directly with our School Improvement Goals of increasing family
involvement and continuing our standing as a Community School.
Student and Family Involvement
Each grade level will choose one month to plan and carry out a service
project, either serving the school, the surrounding University Place
neighborhood, or each other. This project will teach students the
importance and benefits of giving to others. This will not be an
assignmenttherefore not graded-- but will hopefully become a cherished
project for years to come.
Students will work with teachers at their grade level to either choose
from or create their own service project, make necessary contacts, plan
dates and secure permission for their chosen project. Families may be
involved in the project by donating supplies, volunteering time throughout
the planning and event, making phone calls or helping to make
arrangements. Teachers and administrators will work with students to
communicate the event using flyers or media.

Possible service projects may include (but not limited to):

Playground/school yard clean up (litter, leaves, etc.)

UPCO (local neighborhood park) cleanup
Clean/recycle in our building or neighborhood
Organize donations to the food bank or other service organization
Volunteer for a school event (concert, movie night, literacy night,
etc.)
Help out an elderly neighbor with tasks such as weeding a garden or
yard clean up
Create a welcome video and welcome packet for families and
students that are new to Huntington
Organize a car wash with proceeds benefitting our upcoming
playground restoration project
Organize and manage Pennies for Patients or the Red Cross Penny
war
Volunteer to help clean the cafeteria after breakfast (one class
helps each day in the grade level)
Random Acts of Kindness to students at Wesleyan University,
Dawes Middle School, Northeast High School or local business
Write letters to service men and women
Make and send cards to residents of a retirement home
Create and organize an Anti-Bullying Campaign
Create and perform a skit or a play for the school
Contact a list of special guest speakers to come to the school and
share a book with some classes
Develop and carry out a fitness club for the students at Huntington
to attend before school for a week
