What is a Preliminary Design Stage Definition?

Where the Preliminary Design Phase?

Preliminary design stage may also be known as conceptual design or architectural design. During this
phase, the high level design concept is created, which will implement the requirements of complex
electronics. The design concept can be expressed as a functional block diagram description, design and
architecture, sketches, and / or behavioral HDL (hardware description language).

The focus of the preliminary design is to determine the approximate dimensions, weight, force, load limits
and other physical characteristics to the optimal plane, it is best to maximize value for the competition.
The main areas of concern are the wing area, span and size of the empennage. Routines are modeled
based on the conceptual design; carefully consider the specific needs of competition.
The purpose of the design phase (early and detailed) is to create a design that would really and truly
implement the requirements. For the preliminary designstage, the main purpose is to map out how the
complex electronics will perform the functions specified in the requirements, within the limits of the device,
the interface is defined, and the device will operate in the environment. At this stage, the designer must
maintain perspective and see the operating system of complex electronics in concert with the entire
system. Now is the time to identify inconsistencies, misunderstandings, and ambiguities.
Design assurance objectives are to verify that the design has to implement all the requirements, and that
it implements nothing but the requirement. Any deviations (such as additional functions which may
indicate missed requirements) are reintroduced into the process engineering requirements.
The main design activities for the preliminary design phase are:
- Create high-level design descriptions.
- Identify the major components, including third-party modules or IP cores.
- Any derived requirements resulting from this process is fed back into the requirements engineering
process
- Any omissions or errors are resolved
- Include reliability, maintenance, and test the features necessary to meet the performance requirements
and quality, and to ensure that testing can be performed to verify the requirements.
- Identify constraints on other system elements that are the result of high-level design.
This assurance process for complex electronics assumes that the requirements of complex electronics
have been developed assessed, and baseline (formalized). In fact, these requirements can be included in
the specification of higher-level assembly requirements, such as circuit boards or sub-system.
Requirements for complex electronics will likely be a work in progress, as the design decisions in other
areas of the system influences the function CE devices will appear. Management requirements will be an
important process throughout the design, implementation, and testing phases.

During this stage of the system lifecycle, subsystems that perform the desired system
functions are designed and specified in compliance with the system specification. Interfaces
between subsystems are defined, as well as overall test and evaluation requirements. [2] At the
completion of this stage, a development specification is produced that is sufficient to
perform detailed design and development.
Key steps within the preliminary design stage include:

Functional analysis

Requirements allocation

Detailed trade-off studies

Synthesis of system options

Preliminary design of engineering models

Development specification
