DEFINITION OF GUIDANCE

Guidance is a process to help individuals understand themselves and their


surrounding world so that they can use their skills, abilities and talents to
the maximum ( Suradi Salim, 1996)

Process : an act that is done gradually towards an objective

physical, emotional and spiritual as well as believe and do righteous deeds.

The Principles of Counselling
1. Counseling is given to normal people who are facing confusion and
agitation.
2. Relationship between counselor and client interaction based on intimacy
and trust. Trust is an important factor.
3. Counselor helps the client to make a decision, counselors do not make a
choice or decision. "Counselors like a torch"
4. Counselors believe a person should be given the opportunity to choose
and achieve life goals.
5. Orientation toward counseling should cooperate rather than coercion.
6. Counselor uses an approach based on methods and theories in
counseling.
7. Counseling should be based on good ethics.
Role of Teacher as Counselor
All schools should have a counselor
Teachers should be given minimum training to act as counselor

and mental development of morals.

3) Provide appropriate school planning that suit pupils abilities, interests and

personal traits.
8) Work with parents to monitor students' progress.

The importance of guidance and counseling
1. Provide Information
- Problems usually arise due to lack of information
- Gaining a clear understanding to help clients overcome problems
2. Promoting Literacy
- Helping clients understand themselves and the environment
- Learned that clients themselves are the cause of the problem faced
3. Providing Support
- Provides emotional support, intimacy to reduce the burden of the problem
4. Conflict Resolution
- Reduce tense between two parties
- Helping to accept the differences and how to overcome

- Helping clients to resolve issues that interfere
- Investigate and understand the kind of pressure or problems faced by
clients
