This publication represents a standard for substantial and durable

construction and acceptable performance for flexible connectors of other than allmetai construction for gas appliances. It is the result of years of experience in the
utilization of gas, supplemented by extensive resear&
Nothing in this standard is to be considered in any way as indicating a
measure of q d t y beyond compliance with the provisions it contains. It is designed
to ailow compliance of flexible com&= of other than ail-metai 00'on iEor gas
appliances, the construction and performance of which may exceed the various
provisions specified herein. In its preparation, full recognition has been given to
possibilities of improvement through ingenuity of design. As progress takes place,
modifications may become necessary. When they a r e believed desirable,
recommendations should be forwarded to the Chairman of Accredited Standards
Commitbe 221,l East Pleasant Valley Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44131.
Safe and satisfactory operation of a flexible connectors of other than allmetal construction for gas appliances depends to a great extent upon its proper
installation and it shouid be installed in accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code,
ANSI 2223.1, manufacturers' installation instructions and local municipal building

codea
Users of this American National Standard are advised that the devices,
activities within its scope may be subject to regulation at the Federal state
produor local level. Users are strongly urged to investigate this possibility through
appropriate channels. In the event of a confiict with this standard, the Federal, state
or local regulation should be followed.

CAUTION NOTICE. This American National Standard may be revised or withdrawn

at any time. The procedures of the American National Standards Institute, Inc.,
require that action be taken to reaffirm, revise or withdraw this standard no later
than five ( 6 ) years from the date of approval. Purchasers of American National
Standards may receive ament information on al standards by calling or writing the
American National Standards Institute, Inc., 11 West 42nd Street, New York,

EFFEcTlE DATE. An organization using this standard for product evaluation 88 a

part of its certification program
will normally establish the date by which all
'
products certifed by that

HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARD

FOR FLEXIBLE CONNECTORS OF CY"ER THAN ALzrMETAL
C O N ~ U C I ' I O NFOR GAS APPLIANCES
(This History is infornmtive and is not part of the standard.)

At its June 1961 meeting, the Subcommittee on

Listing Requirements for Connectors for Gas
Appliances considered the need for a standard for
gas appliance connectors of other than all-metal
construction. The subcommittee requested the
American Gas Association Laboratories conduct an
investigation for the purpose of obtaining data from
which a standard for such connectors could be
developed.

approved as American National Standard by the

American National standards Institute, in 1971.
The third, fourth and fifth editions of the other
than all-metal connector standard were approved as
American National Standards by the American
National Standards Institute in 1979,1985and 1992.
Following the procedure outlined above, the 221
Committee adopted further revisions to this dandard
in line with industry developments. This, the sixth
edition of the other than all-metal connector standard,
was approved as an American National Standard by
the American National Standards Institute on
March 10,1995.

The results of the investigation were reviewed

by the subcommittee at its October 1962 meeting and
a draft standard was adopted which was distributed
for review and comment during March 1S3.

This draft standard was reconsidered by the

subcommittee, in light of comments received, at its
September 1963 meeting and subsequently adopted
by the 221 Committee in March 1964. The first
edition was approved as American Standard by the
American Standards Association in September 1964.

Previous editions of the other than all-metal

connedor standard and addenda thereto, approved by

the American National Standards Institute, are as

221Ca5-1985
221.45-1992

On August 24,1966, the American Standards

Association, Inc., was reconstituted as the United
States of America Standards Institute. On October 6,
1969, the United States of America Standards
Institute was renamed the American National
Standards Institute, Inc. As a result, the second
edition of the other t h a n all-metal connector
standard, which was retitled American National
Standard for Flexible Connectors of Other Than
All-Metal Construction for Gas Appliances, was

to as COM&IS, constructed entjreiy of new, unused
parts and materials, consisting of flexible tubing
dependent on other than all-metal construction for
gastightness, of lig,' i g ,' i 2 ,' I B , ' i 4 ,1 and l'id inch

fittings for the connector shall meet the spedkations
shown in 'Jhble I, within commercial tolerances, and
satisfactory evidence of this fact shall be furnished to
the testing agency.

For the purpose of this standard, an unused

connector, including end fittings, is considered to be
a connector which has not been installed.
